How it all Started. Humble Beginnings. 1988Posted by Michael Mill (Elverson, PA, United States) on 7 November 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. This is the picture that started my passion for photography. Taken with my first SLR, a Minolta X700 manual 35mm, in 1988. At that time I really had no idea what I was doing and I pretty much lucked into this shot of my then stepdaughter Colette. Encouraged by friends and family I entered this shot in the Pottstown Mercury Snapshot Awards where it won 1st place for that week. The Mercury then entered all of their winners into The Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards (KINSA). The image went on to earn Distinguished Recognition Of Achievement from Kodak and was displayed at Disney's Epcot Center for one year. I remember the prize was a cheap point and shoot Kodak 35mm LOL, at least The Mercury paid a cash prize. It's interesting as I look at this image now 21 years later, my photography has advanced to the point that this image would probably end up in the deleted folder today. This is a poorly done flatbed scan of a 20 year old print, I cleaned it up as well as I could so that I could share a piece of my history with you. Thanks for looking.

Wayne from Chalfont ,PA, United StatesI think you're being a bit harsh, this is a nice shot! I started with a Yashica manual 35mm in the early 80's and I honestly have no recollection of the shot. I have thousands of prints that I have not looked through in years. Maybe it's time to reminisce and find some to scan. 7 Nov 2009 11:20am Christophe Esnard from Angoulême, FranceIn french: "Même pas peur !" 7 Nov 2009 12:40pm Michelle from Elverson, United StatesGreat story, great shot. Thank you for sharing. 7 Nov 2009 12:56pm Walter from Watkinsville, United StatesI hear your story and think we criticize our photos too much these days. I think this is a great photo that shows so much more than just a photo. We peer into the eyes of the young to get a glimpse of the curiosity of a child. Grainy - yes. Perfect light - no. Really good photo - yes. One that you will always remember - yes. 7 Nov 2009 3:22pm |
